Romans 3: 26 - The Fairness/Justice Paradox

July 4th, 2010

Nahum stated this paradox in his prophecy.  Jonah was confused by it, caring little for the souls of a million Ninevites.  Paul resolved it in the book of Romans.  Compare the two links below, plus the Jonah link at the bottom of this page.

Logical Conclusion

How can God be both just and forgive,

since the one says you’ll die, other live?

If the game is played be fair,

and He lets sin up there,

then His plans full of holes, like a sieve.

The answer of course is the cross, "Whom God has set forth *(in his blood) to be a propitiation through faith, to declare His (God’s) righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, in order that He might be just and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus", Romans 3: 25, 26 below.

*Whom God has set forth (in his blood) is used in the NASB, and (by his blood) both in the ASV and in the ESV, avoiding the implication that we are saved by our faith in his blood.

Only the awesome doctrine of Election based in Gods absolute sovereignty can resolve this paradox. We all deserve justice, but it is to Gods glory that by His grace He elects even one of us to salvation
