The Babylonan exile/captivity served a secondary purpose, to strip Israel’s false shepherds of their flocks and their meal-tickets, plus (as we see it) to provide a bit of wry God-humor.  Read the two links below.

Shepherds, living off fat of My land,

are deserving severe reprimand.

My sheep suffer neglect.

Flocks I now will protect

by removing them out of your hand.
