Matthew’s genealogy (Matthew 1: 11) traces Joseph’s ancestry to the forever disqualified Jeconiah (also called Jehoiachin), the son of Jehoiakim. Had Joseph been the father, it would have colored any claim Jesus might make to be the Messiah and heir to the Throne of David, ruling over Judah.
