1 Chronicles 4: 10 - The Prayer of Jabez

November 9th, 2008

The Bus Folks found several copies of  "The Prayer of Jabez" on the 50% Off table at the local Book Store.  A quick scan of it reminded us of Job’s response to his wife.  Compare the two links below.

The word evil in the first link below is better translated as pain.

The name Jabez means make sorrowful.

Prayer of Jabez

Jabez’ "Lord set me free from this pain"

is mankind’s oft-repeated refrain.

When God fails to perform

some think that’s not the norm.

Job regarded such thoughts with disdain.

A universal condition, Romans 8: 22 below

The word evil is better translated as pain

God is not anthropomorphic but the reverse

A normal but unseemly reaction

Job 2:10

Believers know that one day God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.   There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, ( Revelation 21: 4 below).   Therefore set aside all such concerns and press on, running the race for the prize which is set before us ( Hebrews 12: 1 below).

In all fairness to the original, when the Hebrew word for pain is translated grief as in the KJV, the verse carries a much different meaning and the above critique loses some of its sting.
